These Girls Can – Batley Bulldogs Girls Team inspire our Playwright

Batley Bulldogs

In October Batley Bulldogs Under 15 Girls became the first British female team to tour Australia and test their skills amongst some of their best teams and our playwright Kev Fegan went with them.

The team, who were only established in 2012, have already won the English championship twice, hosted Australia Schools Champions Merrimac State High and have now made history by touring the Gold Coast. The girls’ story first caught Kev’s attention when we supported him to spend time at the club as writer in residence.

Kev explains:

“Creative Scene is all about making art a part of every day life- so we were interested in making great art that would be relevant to a sports-loving local community. I was writer in residence at the Bulldogs Stadium – and tasked with finding some interesting stories. We had assumed that any work we created would focus on the men’s pro team – but when I met the girls, heard what they had achieved and their ambitions I knew that was the story we need to tell.”

Creative Scene and the Bulldogs Girls coach, Craig Taylor hope that the tour and resulting play will raise the profile of the girls sport.

Craig said:

“We are really excited that Kev could join us on this tour. The girls sport in the UK is not widely celebrated and so it’s a great reward for the girls that their achievements are being recognized in this way. They are a real credit to themselves, their families and me.”

Kev is now working on a script based on his experience with the girls in Australia but if you can’t wait until the show is produced you can find out how the girls get on at Kev’s blog
