REUNION CAFÉ UNVEILS NEW BATLEY-INSPIRED MOSAIC

A new Batley inspired mosaic created by artist Frances Taylor, along with local community groups and regulars of the Reunion Café in Batley, will be unveiled by the Mayor of Kirklees on Tuesday 10 March.

As part of our Artist@Work programme, Frances Taylor, of community arts organisation the Big Hoo-Ha Co, has been working in Reunion Café for the past three months with local groups such as the cadets, an Aspergers support group, a mums and kids group and an older people’s luncheon club all helping to design the mosaic. Customers have also been joining drop-in sessions to help make the mosaic, which will be permanently displayed on the wall of the café, celebrating all things Batley.

Frances is well known for her mosaics, having made and installed many large-scale indoor and outdoor works across Yorkshire. She has created designs for Chelsea Flower Show and the Eden Project, and in 2014 worked with people in West Yorkshire to create a commemorative mosaic for the Tour De France.

Café owner Sian Dawson said: “It’s been great to have Frances working at the café and capturing the imaginations of our customers. People here are passionate about celebrating Batley and it’s been fantastic to see people come back week on week to offer ideas and see the work develop. I can’t wait for everyone to see the results of all the hard work so if you’re about in Batley, do pop by and see it!”
